Santa Monica Buys First Zero Emissions, Plug-In, Medium-Duty Truck

The City of Santa Monica, Calif., which has long prided itself on its environmental efforts, has acquired the first medium-duty battery-electric truck to be sold by U.S. manufacturer Electrorides . The Zero Truck will be used by the city water department as part of a fleet-wide effort to cut emissions and reduce fuel use. The Southern California beach city, which provides solar parking bays in its civic center for recharging electric vehicles, will use the truck as a city service vehicle, according to Electrorides, the Orange County-based electric truck converter. Electrorides says the truck, based on the Isuzu's N series truck chassis, is the only medium-duty, U.S. built, battery-electric truck available for sale this year. “The vehicle is a realistic solution for fleets to go 'zero emission' and will be used for evaluation and demonstration to other state and local governments ,” said Tedd Abramson, chief executive officer of the closely held company.
