The 2008 Toyota Yaris

When I started looking for vehicles priced under $20,000 I came across the Toyota Yaris, which is winning awards across the board. Priced at $15,999 the Yaris is reportedly fun, funky, and scores high in safety ratings.

But what kind of name is Yaris? With a little research I found out:

The manufacturer states:

Yaris stems from a goddess in Greek mythology, named Charis, who was a symbol of beauty and elegance. We used the German expression of agreement, “ya”, because we think this new name best symbolizes the car’s broad appeal in styling and is representative of Toyota’s next generation of global cars.

Incidentally - Toyota car names usually have some kind of meaning… Avalon is a mythical place, Corolla is part of a flower, Camry comes from the Japanese word for crown, etc. Another bit of useless trivia, but it is fun!

According to drive.com The Yaris garnered some serious attention for its class-leading $14,990 price, above-average quality and competitive space, flexibility, and safety (curtain airbags are a $750 option and elevate the Toyota to five-star status in NCAP crash testing). Murmurs about the three-door body’s practicality, or lack thereof, were resolved by the availability of a five-door at a reasonable ask.

Toyota Yaris Features:

- 0 to 60 in 8.84 seconds
- 1.5L 106 hp I4 engine
- 34 mpg city
- 39 to 40 mpg highway
- Bottom Line Price Range: $10,257 - $13,109

Although many in the industry are singing its praises consumer reports was not so kind, touting it, “Sloppy and hard to control at its limits….scored too low in our testing to be recommended.”

Although from the overall research I did the Yaris got much more praise then not. If you need a dependable, safe and reasonably priced vehicle check out the new Toyota Yaris.
