2007 Ford Focus

by Jeff on September 19, 2007

Bold Moves or Old Moves?

Ford Focus. Are these words strung together any oxymoron? Living in Dearborn, MI - at the heart of Ford country I could get hung by my toes for this. But in all honesty, the Ford line-up has been putting me to sleep for years…. there just hasn’t been anything but YAAAWWWNNN.

Oddly enough living in Ford city I see so many interesting people brought in from all over the world to design and engineer these vehicles. Though what I actually see on the road is just like Wonder bread. And the Mustang to me is just like Wonder bread with hot sauce. You can’t hide the processed white bread that the hot sauce has sunk into.

Focus, the Ford Focus. Yes…. well it is a design that I actually find somewhat cute and somewhat interesting. And apparently drivers like this vehicle…. Let’s see what edmunds had to say:

Focus is a fun-to-drive economy car with a dose of European flair that shoppers in the United States can appreciate as well. Three-door and five-door hatchback variants make stronger visual statements than the more conventional sedan and wagon body styles, but each Focus flavor offers a likable blend of sportiness and practicality.

The main downside to a Ford Focus purchase from the new-car buyer standpoint is that the car is getting rather aged in terms of features and refinement when compared to newer competition in this price range. The U.S. version has never been completely redesigned, despite the fact that an all-new, second-generation Focus is now on sale in Europe. We recommend that economy car shoppers consider their options carefully before buying a new Focus. As a used vehicle, however, the Focus represents a solid pick, especially since its lower resale value compared to import-brand competitors typically translates to lower purchase prices.

A modest 2005 refresh brought the Ford Focus lineup into its present form, providing cosmetic changes on the outside, a revised control layout inside and a new engine lineup. Numerous body style and trim-level combinations are available. The ZX3 (three-door) and ZX5 (five-door) hatchbacks are available in S, SE and SES trims, while the ZXW wagon comes in SE or SES only. The ZX4 sedan is available in S, SE, SES and the sport-flavored ST. S models are fairly basic, while SE models have the amenities most buyers will want. The SES provides access to options like leather upholstery and heated seats.

The sedan-only Focus ST gets improved brakes, a sport-tuned suspension and a 2.3-liter, four-cylinder engine that produces 151 horsepower. All other Focus models are powered by a 136-hp, 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine that offers decent response coupled with good fuel economy. A five-speed manual transmission is standard across the line and a four-speed automatic is optional on all but the base S ZX3 hatchback and the ST sedan.

After so many years on the market, there are many areas in which the Focus has been eclipsed by the competition. In reviews of the Ford Focus, we’ve found the car lacking in terms of build and materials quality; interior storage and safety features. Four-wheel disc antilock brakes are standard only on the ZX4 ST; all others have rear drums and optional ABS. Also optional on most models are traction control and front seat-mounted side airbags. Side curtain airbags are not offered.

Our editors have always liked the Ford Focus, and the car earned Editors’ Most Wanted Award designations from 2000-’03. Although we consider it a good buy on the used market, the car’s reliability record hasn’t been perfect, particularly the 2000 models, which were plagued by recalls. We’d advise a thorough mechanical inspection before you buy. Additionally, shoppers looking at the SVT Focus should pay special attention to the quantity and quality of any aftermarket modifications the previous owner may have made.

Ford Focus
Ford FocusRedesigned for 2008 the Ford Focus has been a very reliable vehicle with zippy performance and a nice list of featured to boot. The theme for the 2008 is “from Techno to Techie”. Ford Brings Color Into Focus

by Jeff on September 17, 2007

Color Chip FanHow important a factor is color when decided which car to buy? Very important. At least Ford’s corporate research says so. According to a recent survery by Ford, 39 percent of consumers will leave a dealership if they don’t have a vehicle in the color of their choice. (I know I almost did. We wanted silver - the dealer didn’t have silver. They wanted us to take something on their lot - but we wanted silver. Stalemate. Only after getting up to leave the dealer did they even try to work out a dealer-trade for the color we wanted.)

Buying a car is an emotional purchase. We love our cars. Our cars take on parts of our personality, and vice-versa. For some, only fire engine red or canary yellow will do. For others, classics like black or white are where it’s at. And for the bold - funky greens, purples and rusty oranges define their style.

To help lead customer paint trends, Ford has launched a new process, integrating dealers, designers and marketing, manufacturing and vehicle operations experts aiming to create the best paint color palette for customers nationwide. By 2009, 45 percent of Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles by volume will feature new paint colors, marking the biggest color changeover in Ford’s history.

45 percent new colors? Are you thinking what I’m thinking? I’m envisioning pastels, bright metallics, neon greens, blues and yellow. Think again. Color is more than, well, color. Here is how Ford is taking the science and art of color to a new level:

Color of the Year – Ford is turning up the heat with a custom deep, spicy red – called Candy Apple Red – featured on the 2008 Ford Mustang. Confident and aimed at the design-savvy consumer, this hot hue takes its cue from Chili Pepper, which world-renowned color authority Pantone named Color of the Year.

Meet the New Black – For the 2008 model year, black is the new black. Ford has created a new, industry-leading pigment named Tuxedo Black that will launch on the all-new Lincoln MKS flagship sedan. This deep metallic, like a set of jewels, isn’t an ordinary metallic that is composed of mica flakes but instead has a new flake derived from glass. Because this glass pigment radiates such a beautiful sparkle, less of this special flake has to be added, providing a black that glistens like never before.

Eat It Up – Ford’s food-inspired vehicle color collection expands, too. The paints are named after edibles that designers know taste good, look delicious and evoke a mouth-watering juiciness. Whether customers have a sweet tooth or are looking for a little spice, Ford’s 2008 vehicles are creating an appetite with new colors including Candy Apple Red, Dark Cherry, French Silk, Light Sage, Kiwi Green, Merlot, Orange Frost and White Chocolate.

Wellspring – Inspired by the tones and shades of water found in nature, wellspring hues of pale greens and frosty blues top this season’s palette, as well. Two of the top-selling colors on the new Ford Escape, Mercury Mariner and the hybrid versions are Kiwi Green metallic and Ice Blue metallic. Additionally, a new opaque metallic that mirrors foliage, called Moss Green, is offered on the Lincoln MKZ and other sedans for 2008.

Density Rich – Weighty metallics aren’t just preserved for handbags, shoes and jewelry this season. Select Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles will appear even more chic in an all-new smoky-silver metallic, called Vapor, and an incandescent bronze, called Earth.

Say Goodbye to Refrigerator White – Long gone are the days of white vehicles that look like ordinary kitchen appliances. White is making a comeback – now that Ford has developed a natural hue without being pasty or stark. Ford’s great white effort started with the 2007 model year’s creamy White Chocolate tri-coat metallic. On average, more than 30 percent of Lincoln customers chose this premium paint color. For 2008, Lincoln is offering the color White Suede across the lineup, offering customers a hue that delivers the sparkle of a metallic in a soothing pigment. White remains the top auto color of choice for consumers in 29 out of 50 states.

Savoring Savories – Exuberant, energizing hues are back by popular demand. For instance, Blazing Copper – the trend color launched on the Ford Edge in 2007 – returns. A success in the market, this trendy hue was chosen by nearly 10 percent of Edge customers for their new crossovers last year – doubling traditional feature color take rates – and it remains hot for the 2008 model year.

Paint Quality: More than Meets the Eye – Ford’s paint performance has only 91 TGWs (things gone wrong) compared with Toyota’s 103, according to an RDA Research study released in July.

Say No to Sludge – Industry-wide, 24 million pounds of paint overspray are consolidated into non-hazardous sludge and taken to landfills each year. Ford is developing a new anti-corrosion technology that will reduce paint sludge production by 90 percent and reduce water use by 40 percent. Ford is currently field-testing the new technology in a small fleet of Lincoln Town Cars.

Eco-Friendly Paint Technologies – Industry-wide, 70 million pounds of paint fumes are collected and destroyed by traditional pollution abatement systems each year. Two Ford technologies are reducing greenhouse gases. Fumes-to-Fuel at Oakville Assembly will reduce CO2 emissions by up to 88 percent and eliminate NOx emissions. And Three-wet paint technology at Ohio Assembly is reducing CO2 emissions by 15 percent. U-Haul trucks are currently on U.S. highways, field-testing the technology’s long-term durability.
