Safest Cars of 2007 - Part 2

by Jeff on March 1, 2007

In our previous post we began looking at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s “Safest Cars for 2007″.

There are seven vehicles in the Midsize SUV category that made the list:

2007 Acura RDX - it is model year debut, the Acura RDX received Good ratings in the frontal and size impact crash tests and comes standard with electronic stability control.

2007 Ford Edge - also making its debut is the 2007 Ford Edge which received “Good” ratings in both crash test categories. ESC (electronic stability control) comes standard in the 2007 Ford Edge.

2007 Honda Pilot - Honda’s well reviewed midsize SUV also makes the grade with “Good” ratings and comes standard with ESC.

2007 Lincoln MKX - another new model, this time from Lincoln makes the list of “safest cars for 2007″. The 2007 Lincoln MKX comes standard with ESC and performed well in both the frontal and side-impact crash tests.

2007 Mercedes M Class - the Mercedes M class has been recognized for excellence in safety since 1999. With standard ESC and good performance in both crash tests, the 2007 Mercedes M Class blends luxury with safety.

2007 Subaru B9 Tribeca - Subaru has a long-standing reputation for building quality vehicles, and the B9 Tribeca is no exception. 2006 and 2007 models years have made the “safest vehicles” list.

2007 Volvo XC90 - Volvo is another brand long associated with safety. The 2007 Volvo XC90 continues the trend of “safest midsize suv” a recognition it has earned since 2003.

SMALL SUVS

Two vehicles round out the list for 2007 Safest Vehicles:

2007 Honda CR-V - The Honda CR-V has performed well in the front impact crash test since 2002. With the addition of front and rear head curtain airbags and front seat mounted torso airbags, the Honda CR-V moved onto the list of safest small SUV in 2005 and has remained there ever since.

2007 Subaru Forester - just like the B9 Tribeca, the Subaru Forester is another “safest” vehicle from the Subaru line. “Good” results in the frontal crash test date back to 1999, and side-impact to 2003. Electronic stability control is option on the 2007 Subaru Forester.

Foreign manufacturers dominate in these categories - which isn’t very good news for the Big 3 Detroit manufacturers. To learn more information about any of these vehicles you can read more from the IIHS website or you can request a speak with a local car dealer in the AutoFigures.com dealer network.

Safest Cars of 2007

by Jeff on February 27, 2007

Every year the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety publishes its “Top Safety Pick” report. The Institue provides a rating of “good”, “acceptable”, “marginal”, or “poor” based on each vehicle’s performance in high-speed front and side impact tests as well as evaluations of seat and head restraints for protection against injuries sustained in rear-impact crashes.

In order for a vehicle to be eligible for the “Top Safety Pick” it must first receive a “GOOD” rating in all three tests. Starting in 2007, each winning vehicle must also offer electronic stability control (ESC). ESC systems use automatic computer-controlled braking of individual wheels to help the driver maintain control in situations where a vehicle without ESC would skid out of control and likely leave the road. This criteria was added based on Institute research indicating that ESC significantly reduces crash risk, especially fatal single vehicle crashes.

You can learn more about the specific testing details here.

The Winners for 2007 in the categories of Large Car, Midsize Car, Minivan, Midsize SUV and Small SUV are:

Large Car
2007 Audi A6 - since 2005 the Audi A6 has had good performance in the front, side and rear tests and comes standard with ESC.

Midsize Cars
2007 Audi A4 - since February 2002 the Audi A4 has consistently received a “good” rating in the frontal crash test. “Good” ratings on the side impact crash test have come from Audi A4 models manufactured after October 2004.

2007 Saab 9-3 - The Saab 9-3 has received a “good” rating in the frontal crash test for models dating back to 2003. 2004-2007 Saab 9-3 models have received a “good” rating in the side impact crash test.

2007 Subaru Legacy - The Subaru Legacy has received a “good” rating in the frontal crash test dating back to 2000. Improved performance in the side impact crash test promoted the 2006-2007 model to a “good” rating up from “marginal” the year before. ESC is optional on the Subaru Legacy.

Minivans
There are two winners in the minivan category:

2007 Hyundai Entourage - brand new for 2007, the Hyundai Entourgae made its debut with “Good” ratings in both the frontal and side impact crash tests and comes standard with ESC.

2007 Kia Sedona - beginning with the 2006-2007 models years, the Kia Sedona received “good” ratings in both crash tests and comes standard with eletronic stability control.

Tomorrow we’ll feature the 7 models in the midsize SUV category as well as the 2 small SUV winners.
