It's official, we'll get a share of the 60 minutes of Chevrolet Volt time that General Motors has allotted Edmunds for a series of limited driving tests this weekend. The automaker is letting a number of journalists get behind the wheel of a pre-production prototype to experience for the first time outside of GM”s engineering circles how the car behaves when the 1.4-liter engine-generator is running and the Volt's in what is called charge-sustaining mode. Previously, the powertrain has only been tested by journalists in all-electric, or charge-depleting, mode. As in the past, we won't be given the opportunity to take the car on the open road – our Volt testing will be done on a closed route and likely at relatively low speeds. But we should get some idea of how things are shaping up as the Volt team enters the home stretch, with production expected to begin in just about one year. We'll be posting photos and impressions on Green Car Advisor early Sunday evening.
